Identified students may participate in the special education program at Calaveras Hills High School. A student's IEP may place him/her in one of four resource classes: English, math, social studies or tutorial. Other classes are carefully selected by the student’s advisor in consultation with the special education instructor. Students are mainstreamed at least two periods a day or have a four-period class schedule.

Alcohol and Drug Counseling

A drug and alcohol counselor, sponsored by Santa Clara County, meets with students who have been referred by staff members or who have referred themselves. Students may see the counselor on an individual basis or they may join one of the on-going groups. All drug and alcohol counseling is confidential.

Student Review Team

The Student Study Team includes the school principal, assistant principal, drug/alcohol counselor, school counselor, selected teachers, and a member of the classified staff. The Student Study Team receives referrals from any member of the staff and provides an integrated approach to students' special needs.

Career and College Counseling

Ms Beatie, Calaveras Hills counselor, and advisors, assist students with career and college choices. Students are given opportunities to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), participate in field trips to local community colleges and the Central County Occupational Center, listen to presentations by community college speakers on campus and off, and investigate all post-secondary options. Students may also explore career opportunities via the Internet or through the EUREKA program.

Students who want to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or other college-oriented tests, or take the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) may get information and applications from Ms Beatie. Whenever possible, placement/assessment tests for local community colleges will be made available to students on the Cal Hills campus. Ms Beatie also provides financial aid workshops and extensive assistance in completing forms and other follow-through.

Honors and Awards

Calaveras Hills High School students who attain their diplomas participate in Graduation Ceremony. In 2006, 80 students graduated from Cal Hills in a ceremony seen by of hundreds friends and family members.

Throughout the year, students are recognized as Student of the Week, Advisee of the Month and Student of the Month. Graduating seniors who plan to continue their education or receive vocational training are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Exemplary seniors may also receive one of three perpetual awards: the Roger Wollesen Award, the Flemming Madsen Award and the Gladys Fernandes Award.

The Roger Wollesen Award is given in memory of the counselor/teacher who helped establish Calaveras Hills High School in 1969 and was an integral part of the staff until his death in 1995. Mr. Wollesen encouraged academic excellence throughout his career, so this award is given to a senior with enthusiasm for learning and an outstanding academic record.

The Flemming Madsen Award honors Mr. Flemming Madsen who served as principal at Calaveras Hills High School for ten years. In his post-retirement he serves as the liaison between Cal Hills and Milpitas High School. Because Mr. Madsen was instrumental in helping so many students turn their lives around, this award is designated for the senior who has made the most positive life changes while attending Cal Hills.

The Gladys Fernandes Award honors the first secretary at Cal Hills, she continued to offer her services long after her retirement. Until her death in 1994, Gladys treated everyone at Cal Hills as an extension of her family and this award is presented to the senior who best exemplifies the family spirit of the school.

Gold -Cord Award Recognition
Students who complete seventy-five or more hours of VOLUNTARY community service are awarded a Gold Cord. They are recognized at the graduation ceremony by being awarded a gold cord to wear with their graduation gowns.

Out To Lunch Club

This program pairs a Cal Hills student with an adult mentor of the same gender. The adult makes the commitment to take the student to lunch once a month during the school year. The student is released from school and the volunteer provides transportation and pays for lunch. Student participants are recommended by advisors and other staff members and must maintain good attendance and a good attitude to continue in the program. An attempt is made to match students with volunteers according to interests, career goals, and/or ethnicity. The students and mentors participate in an end-of-the-year luncheon.  *The Out To Lunch Club mentoring program was honored by the Santa Clara County Association of Schoo l Boards as an outstanding program in the spring of 1999.  It continues to provide invaluable experiences for students.
